Yma Sumac
Discovered at the age of 13 in the Peruvian Andes, singer prodigy Yma Sumac quickly became in the Fifties an american star, entitled with various names such as the 'Nightingale of the Andes' or the 'Sun Virgin'. Able to sing on more than four octaves, she interpreted traditionnal indian tunes, opera and songs especially written for her voice. She made a career in several Hollywood movies and performed on stage with 'traditionnal' dressing largely inspired from music-hall. This live recording in Moscow, gives a vertiginous, ghostly voice, with kitsch and strange improvisations, that could bring her close to contemporary singer such as Greetje Bijma. |
