The Rudra Veena
Dhrupad style is one of the oldest vocal and instrumental musical form in the Hindustani tradition (North India classical music). It differs from other traditional styles by a greater austerity in the evolution of the raga, with distinctive tones linked between each other by very controlled glissandis, along with a rhythmic accompaniment on pakhawaj, and not on tabla. The Dagar dynasty, or Dagar Bani, originating from Uttar Pradesh, almost holds the exclusivity of the Dhrupad repertory played on the Rudra Veena, one of the oldest traditional musical instruments Indian with Jalatharangam (other interpretations of Dhrupad are vocals). This instrument from which the sitar derives, goes down in low tones in a very moving way, thanks to its two large cases of resonance located at its extremity. The rarity of these recordings and of the players of Rudra-Veena (here respectively father and son) make these CDs great value. |
