Jalatharangam
Made with several porcelain bowls filled with water, Jalatharangam is, along with Rudra-Veena, one of the oldest Indian traditional musical instrument. It is only played in carnatic music (South India), and quite rarely. The player hits the bowls with two small bamboo rods, and the volume of water contained in each bowl sets the pitch of the sound. Sometimes a faint lapping can be heard between two crystalline notes. A.S. Dhandapani plays here with a violin and a jews harp. |
