| Gary Lucas
Listening to Gary Lucas (guitar heroe from Captain Beefheart and composer for Jeff Buckley) playing chinese pop oldies with an Austrian lady singer, one could well imagine a sequel to Paris Texas, in which Harry Dean Stanton would get lost this time in the streets of Shanghai. Just like Bob Brozman, the guitarist associates his National Steel and his Slide with Eastern harmonies and subtleties, slipping from a lovesong to a distorted blues as played on an electrified Pipa lute. Somewhere between The Everly Brothers and In the Mood for Love, a music well imagined, whose sweetness makes one smile just a moment before it brings you tears in the eyes. |
