Cheikha Remitti
Having taken refuge in a bar at the time of a rainy concert in French Algeria of the Forties, young singer Sâadia started to offer drinks to the customers, reminding the few French words learned from the song "Madame, remettez un panaché" (Madam, give a shandy), her nickname "Remitti" was quickly found. At the origin of the raï movement, she sings alcohol, night life, sex, love, and her repertory will be looted without shame in the 70's and 80's by the rising generation of algerian singers in France. On Raï Roots, she is accompanied by very simple instrumentation, in addition to the unavoidable 'Reverb' effect on the microphone: a gasba flute and two drums, one guellal and one bendir, whose snares strings beneath the drum skin stir the basis rhythmic with an extatic vocation. |
