Tlahoun Gèssèssè

Along with Mahmoud Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete, Tlahoun Gessesse is today one of the living icons of Ethiopia. From both amharic and oromo backgrounds, the two main ethnic groups, Tlahoun Gessesse represents today according to Francis Falceto (the instigator of the fabulous Éthiopiques collection) THE incarnated voice of the nation. After he began his career in the Fifties under Haïlé Sélassié in official orchestras (the only ones allowed to play at that time), such as the famous Imperial Body Guard Band, he carried on to less official groups, mainly and magnifically orchestrated by Mulatu Astatqe, until the years 70-74 (introduced on this 17th album of the collection). Nowadays one can still listen to the voice and the swing of this contemporary azmaris in all the cabarets and restaurants of Addis Ababa.
