Smithsonian Folkways —
Music of Indonesia Serie

American publisher Smithsonian Folkways released in the 90's a rich collection of recordings (Music of Indonesia — 20 Cds) dedicated to the vast range of musical variety in Indonesia, still very little known today. Number 3 of this serie is about contemporary music in the suburbs of Jakarta on the island of Java, in a disapearing style named Gambang Kromong. Crisscross music par excellence, mixture of traditions sung along with a modern repertoire, it gives birth to an incredible superposition of intruments of various horizon: trumpet with a mexican touch, Hawai-like guitar, flute under strong chinese influence, no doubts, this is Indonesia today!
