Appointed pianist of singer Reinette l’Oranaise, Mustafa Skandrani plays solo on this album and delivers a repertory of châabi (Algerian) and arabo-Andalusian music, beautifully throbbing. In the playing of the stikhbars, he detaches the notes as if telling his beads, in a mixture of relinquishment and sensuality, in silences evoking Thelonious Monk.
