Mouth-Organ of the Murung

Similar to the laotian khens, mouth-organs or Plung from the Murung tribe of Bangladesh, on the Burmese border, are played in a very hypnotic manner, creating long and minimalist pieces. Made out of a gourd in which bamboo pipes are riveted, those mouth-organs, like harmonicas, release a very organic, amplified sound that is sustained with the musician's breath. This recording is of an rather large ensemble and when holding a unique tone during 20 minutes (on the first title), a strange feeling of contemporary music dominates, electric and repetitive like that of Terry Riley’s In C.
