Indonesian Guitars
The guitar was imported in the indonesian archipelago by Portuguese colonization several centuries ago and remains today a popular instrument, played everywhere in the streets, by the beggars, the priests and teenagers, glowing, customized or patched-up, of the size of the Bolivian charango or with a of most traditional shape. Its repertory remains however unknown outside the country and few recordings are available to this date. This twentieth and last opus of the amazing Music of Indonesia collection at Smithsonian/Folkways and directed by Philip Yampolsky in the 1990s, magnificiently fills this gap by proposing recordings realized in Timor, Sumatra, in Jakarta, in Sulawesi and in Sumba. |
