English man in the US for ages, Fred Frith has been triturating the cords of his guitar by all means for even longer, until satisfaction, until he’s drunk his fill. Of the same calibre as Eugene Chadbourne, this inexhaustible scratcher never says no to a meeting, especially when it is about performing with a not yet experienced unit (his discography is something like 300 titles!). For instance, Meltdown, a live recording with the New York based trio Massacre with Bill Laswell (bass) and Charles Hayward (drums), recorded in the Meltdown Festival, London in 2001, is a small gem which differs from some sessions in studios, sometimes a little too much clean and uptight. Here much of unrestrained funky, rock’n roll and jazz backgrounds, and always with a need for new sounds. Laswell plays like a lisping Pastorius, Frith swings between the hard-working ant and the provocative cicada, and Hayward leads the dance.
